I am an Egyptian born artist, educated in the United States, and currently residing in Miami, Florida. I work in the medium of photography and video. My projects tend to explore ideas about women from my perspective of a woman raised in a Muslim family. I migrated with my family from Egypt at a young age, and found the dichotomies between traditional belief, Islamic dogma and a somewhat more freedom oriented view of women fascinating. I often explore these dichotomies in my art, as well as issues of gender, power, and sex. Cultural elements of adornment, issues of sexuality and gender, as well as psychological investigations of woman objectified are different themes that run through my work. I am currently working on a series which will directly deal with dogma using banned documents, Islamic writings, and text juxtaposed with images that challenge such dogma. I am interested in the continued empowering of women, across cultures and borders, and one way to support that end is through the means of art.
